This Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang was created in the middle age during B.E.2400-2406. The mould created by stone carving which was designed by Royal craftsmen. It is beautifully fine art with lacquer coating and gilded technique on the surface of amulet by coating with Chinese red lacquer or called “Chad” in Thai. The purpose of lacquer coating is to preserve surface and texture durable for a long time. Beside lacquer coating, gilded is another technique of decoration process in the second layers for making amulet beautiful and ancestors belief about prosperous life, wealthy and successful in all aspects. Even time passed over 155 years, the surface of amulet still be kept the same condition as before. It is truly the ancient wisdom to maintain or preserve the valuable substances such amulets remain continuing for a long time.
Among Thai amulets Collectors, Phra Somdej Wat Rakang are the most famous and highly sought after, not only in Thailand but also around the world. Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang is regarded as the king of Thai powder amulets and being the top five amulet in Thai Benjapakee series.
Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang was created and blessed by Somdej Phra Phutthachan Toh Phromrangsri. The ingredients were composed of various materials. The major ingredients were five kinds of sacred powder namely Pattamung, Itthijae, Maharaj, Buddhakhun and Trainisinghae. This five sacred ingredients were added into the substance with incantation of holy-scripture, writing of sutras and holy symbols (yantra) with chalk on a board, erased and rewrite them several hundred time over.
It is quite believable that Somdej Toh had created Phra Somdej leisurely and might have to look for special occasion then made plan how many amulets to be created. It assured that Somdej Toh did not create in many numbers of Phra Somdej Wat Rakang all once for giving in a long time.
If any day Somdej Toh determined to create Phra Somdej, he would bring lime shell and others ingredients for grinding in order to get amount of Phra Somdej materials and formed into square stick then cut into pieces. Each piece was pressed on the mold which was sculptured from slate then bringing board to lay at the back of Phra Somdej then using solid or wood to knock on back of board in order to remove air and make it firmly. After that, taking board out so, it appeared scratch of board or look like betel leaf on the back of Phra Somdej. This remark is importance for Phra Somdej reservation.
Phra Somdej Wat Rakang is the most well-known amulet to both Thai people and foreigners. Phra Somdej amulets were created to inherit Buddhism so, merit people all over the world have opportunity to possess.
